Science

“All of science is nothing more than the refinement of everyday thinking.”

Albert Einstein 1936

Why Science?

The term 'science' sounds as though it has a special property all of its own that needs to be studied as an independent topic.

We choose to blend Science with Montessori because we see it as not a stand-alone, but rather in every part of our daily lives...
...and then we build on it!

Montessori philosophy is based on observing the child and helping them to 'do it myself' so this blends beautifully with the exploratory nature of science as a subject and allows us to bring it into almost every area of our curriculum in some small way.

By tying our learning together around scientific topics we can bring the subject of interest into vocabulary and language development, to mathematics, general knowledge, team work, building concentration and order and artistic interpretation.

Wrapping this all into a beautiful, age appropriate package makes HQ Children's House of Learning that special and unique little persons home away from home where learning is science and science is life.

Zoology

Our program brings a broad array of learning opportunities.

Children enjoy exploring the lives and lifecycles of many creatures including insects and chickens.

Looking at other animals in the world helps us to develop a sense of where and how we fit.

Animals

Studying lifecycles is one of the children's favourite activities...but getting to hatch our own little chicks and watch them grow has been a wonderful experience for us all.

Raising a baby animal and providing it with its needs shows animals have similar needs to us.

botony

Studying seeds, exploring types of plants and leaves and growing our own herbs and vegetables helps give context to where our food comes from and provides another opportunity to care for a living thing.

We grow some food for our chickens too.

Equipment

Microscopes, binoculars, magnets, pipettes, beakers....this list goes on.

Having exciting tools to work with in our environment opens up a world of exploration.

Learning how to use this equipment carefully helps bring a sense of order and responsibility.

chemistry

Starting with using the equipment to explore colours and how they blend to teacher led chemistry experiments.

Learning to concentrate is an important aspect of our program.   This concentration blends through all areas of learning - from science to language to care of self.

Electronics

How careful can I be?

Electronic experiments are great cause and effect exercises.  These often take care and thought and develop strong hand eye co-ordination.

Not only is this important in our science program but it is also great indirect preparation for writing.
